From Uncertainty to Hope:
Selvi and Anjali’s Journey to Canada

In May 2025, Valluvam proudly welcomed Selvi, a mother in her late forties, and her daughter Anjali, in her early twenties, as permanent residents of Canada. Their arrival in Toronto marks more than just a successful resettlement—it’s a story of courage, resilience, and the strength of community.

Their Journey
In 2009, Selvi’s husband was forcibly disappeared during a period of intense conflict in Sri Lanka. Left to care for her two young children, Selvi faced continued challenges and hardship. For several years, the family moved frequently, unable to find safety or stability.
In 2013, seeking refuge, Selvi and her children fled to Thailand. Life there was difficult. Without legal status or reliable support, they lived with uncertainty for over a decade. At one point, Selvi’s son was separated from the family and faced more challenges in his life due to his health and his immigration status. These issues deepened the emotional toll on everyone in the family. Through it all, Selvi and Anjali remained close, facing each challenge together with quiet strength.
Selvi recalls:
“We never imagined coming to Canada. After losing Anjali’s father, life became very hard, but we kept going. Meeting Valluvam changed everything.”
Through Valluvam’s Ara Vali program, Selvi and Anjali received the support they needed—financial assistance, legal sponsorship, and emotional encouragement. Valluvam’s timely intervention made the difference when they needed it most.
“Luckily, Valluvam found us at the right time—especially when we were struggling even for food,” Selvi says.
Today, Selvi and Anjali are safe in Toronto. They are beginning to heal, rebuild their lives, and look ahead with hope.
Selvi still holds on to a quiet dream:
“I hope one day I will reunite with my husband and son here in Canada.”
Her words reflect not only the sorrow of separation but also a deep and enduring hope.
